How to Raise Grass-Fed Chickens

This in-person, on-farm class at Foxfire Farm is for people who are SERIOUS about learning to raise “mobile” chickens.

We’ll take a deep dive into everything you need to know to grow healthy and productive laying hens or meat birds!

In this class, you’ll learn the tips, tricks and techniques we use on our farm to raise thousands of chickens while benefitting from the fertilization and pest control that they provide and without their living space becoming a moonscape.

We’ll begin the class with a lecture type format with demonstrations. After a short break for refreshments, we’ll tour Foxfire Farm to see everything in action. The class concludes an informal Q and A time.

The class size is limited to ensure you get the attention you deserve!

You’ll go home bursting with ideas, actionable tips and helpful resources for raising your own flock of any size!

In this class you will learn all about:

  • Choosing which breeds to raise

  • The benefits of rotational grazing

  • Choosing or building the right coop

  • Preparing for and brooding your chicks

  • Growing your birds

  • Predator protection

  • Rotating your birds through your space (yard, garden, or homestead)

  • The myriad ways you can generate revenue from your birds

2024 CLASS DATES

  • Saturday, July 20 from 8:00am - 12:00pm

  • Saturday, August 17 from 8:00am - 12:00pm

Registration for each class/tour/event will open up on the website about 30 days BEFORE the class/tour/event (email subscribers will be notified via email). We find this shorter time window allows people have a better idea of their schedule and commitments.

Details:

  • Tickets are $200 per person. Handouts/resources, refreshments and a dozen farm-fresh eggs are included.

  • Choose appropriate footwear/clothing. This is a working farm, with farm animals, and I can almost guarantee you WILL get chicken poop on your shoes. Rubber boots are a great option. ;) Also, it’s mid summer and it’s HOT, so dress for the weather!

  • Mobility considerations. Since this a working production farm (not a zoo or park with paved pathways), the terrain is varied and uneven. There are possible tripping hazards and not all areas can be accessed easily by persons with limited mobility. There are no benches or places to rest during the walking tour, so this class is not recommended for individuals that cannot walk/stand for 1-2 hours.

  • Tickets are not refundable, but they are transferable. If you can’t make it, it’s your responsibility find someone else to take your place… or consider your ticket price as a donation to our farm.

  • In case of severe weather, the class may be canceled or rescheduled. Students will be notified via email ASAP. If the class cannot be rescheduled, we will offer refunds.
