About the Breed

Developed in Germany in the early 1970s, the Bielefelder was bred for both utility and temperament — a large, hardy dual-purpose bird that’s as friendly as it is productive. Their stunning “cuckoo” feather pattern, gentle disposition, and impressive size make them a favorite among small farms and family coops alike.

These auto-sexing chickens can be identified by sex at hatch, which means you’ll know exactly what you’re getting. Bielefelders are docile, curious, and steady, thriving in both free-range and enclosed environments. They handle cold weather exceptionally well and are known for their steady egg production even through the shorter days of winter.

Chick Details

Our day-old Bielefelder chicks are hatched here on our regenerative Maryland farm — healthy, vibrant, and ready to begin their new lives in your care. They’ll need a safe, draft-free brooder with a steady heat source, starting at around 95°F in the first week, and decreasing by about 5°F each week until they’re fully feathered (usually by 7-8 weeks of age).

We hatch and raise our chicks in small, carefully managed batches, ensuring they start strong, grow steadily, and develop into the hardy, good-natured hens Bielefelders are known to be.

Shipping & Pick-Up Options

• Farm Pick-Up: Available at our Brandywine, MD farm. Once your order is placed, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a link to schedule your pick-up appointment.
  Please bring a secure carrier — such as a small dog crate, ventilated box, or sturdy moving box.

• Shipping: Birds can be shipped via USPS Priority Express on Mondays or Tuesdays to minimize transit time.
